TV camera remote control system for round table conferences
∈ Simple is Sustainable! ∷

Shunya Susuki

I had been involved in Asian city journalist conference twice in 2007 as the officer in charge of City to City cooperation in the UN-HABITAT Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (Fukuoka). We took on a challenge to hold for the first time, a round table conference to draw out free opinion of the journalists invited from ten Asian cities. I introduced this system to make up for the shortcoming of round table conferences, that is, the faces of the panelists in the back semicircle cannot been seen from the spectators.

I operated the TV camera located in the center of the round table to consistently project each panelist onto the front large screen, It was controlled by a fishing line from the round table side without using power, in other words, in a sustainable way.
This idea was effective to shorten mental distance between the panelists and the spectators and succeeded in making spectators enjoy the Face to Face round table conference.

By the way, the actual expense of this device is 5,000 yen. In the case of the conventional way to shoot panelists with two cameras from the outside of the round table, it costs 500,000 yen by the estimate. Considering the fact that this device was used twice in the conferences,

500,000 yen/time * 2 times - 5,000 yen = 1,000, 000yen - 5,000yen = 995,000yen

In other words, this system made the retrenchment effect of 995,000 yen.

I referred to the best practice of South Africa, Sustainable Water Pump.

Children can pump up underground water by rotating a big ring as children's play, without the use of power such as electricity and gasoline - a perfect example of a sustainable system. I first intended to use an electric device, but changed my mind and decided on manual operation after I read this story.
