Study on the emergency tent
by Shunya Susuki (01June, 2008)
A cheap tent made of 1.8m by 1.8m plastic leisure sheets that I bought at a 100 yen shop
A piece of drawing for the side figure of the tent (07 June, 2008)
Confirmation of the tent's shape
Four pieces of A-4 size recycled paper are cut in the shape of the above diagram and put together as in the left photograph.
(14 June, 2008)
Four pieces of the 1.8m by 1.8m plastic sheet folded at the center are collated with the full-scale CAD drawing. (12 July, 2008)
The four sheets are cut to the full-scale CAD drawing and are connected with each other by 15mm wide double-stick tape. The photograph below shows how it looks. (12 July, 2008)
I made the frame for the tent
(31 August, 2008)

I cut a half dozen young bamboos one month ago and let it dry to use it as the frame.
However, because of the strength problem, I decided at the last minute to use some gardening materials made of thin iron pipes instead.
I cut five 1.8m iron pipes of 8mm in diameter into six and bent them along the curve of my tent as shown in the left photograph.
I used an aluminum pipe of 1cm diameter as joints.

I assembled the tent and its frames in my garden(31 August, 2008)

I will make further studies on frame curve adjustment and the strength of the frames in future.
I assembled the tent and its frames in my garden again.(07 September, 2008)

I readjusted the frames and covered them with the tent sheet.
I confirmed its shape.
(07 September, 2008)

I completed installing two windows in the tent. (22 September 2008)

These windows have an insect screen.
I completed installing a door in the tent.(13 October 2008)

The door has enough folds at its both sides so that no rain or insects can enter the tent when it is open.
I completed installing the floor seat in the tent.(13 October 2008)

The floor is made of 1.8m by 1.8m sheet with a different color. This simple tent is completed with only five pieces of plastic sheet costing 100 yen each.
I assembled the tent.(13 October 2008)

Its windows and door are closed.
Its frames are stuck into the ground.

Its windows and door are opened.

Its windows are opened and its door is closed.
