Avenues of Nanjing
Public spaces that are person-friendly are also eco-friendly
by Shunya Susuki 20 Dec. 2008
The plane trees around Nanjing Aqua City and on the streets are highlighted by Computer Graphics (CG: using Google Earth: Upper side is North)
The streets are covered by green roofs of the plane trees during spring and autumn. The "green roofs" alleviate the severe heat in summer in Nanjing, which is known for being one of the three hottest areas in China (two other cities are Wuhan and Chongqing). Let me show you this avenue. (Pictures taken on 3rd and 4th December 2008)

*There were people playing Chinese chess on the sidewalk in the shade of the trees.
After the reception of the third Asia City Journalist Conference on 5th November, I walked the back streets from the Confucian shrine to Nanjing Aqua City Holiday Inn. Along the way I often saw groups of people sitting in a circle on roadside to play games under a light connected to someone's house. I felt that neighborhood-oriented communities were alive in this ancient city of Nanjing.

*The sidewalk is paved with direction blocks for visually-impaired people.

*People are riding zero-emission vehicles such as bicycles and electric bicycles on the pathway for exclusive use of the two-wheeled vehicle lined with plane trees.
From these examples, we can say that public spaces created along the avenues with plane trees are both people-friendly and eco-friendly.

There is a bus stop in front of Nanjing Aqua City, located between the road and the pathway for exclusive use of the two-wheeled vehicle.

There are barricades between a pathway for exclusive use of the two-wheeled vehicle and a road.
You can see a traffic sign of the pathway for exclusive use of the two-wheeled vehicle.

You can see the low branches of the plane trees spreading over the pathway for exclusive use of the two-wheeled vehicle, preventing cars from entering.

The barricades will be removed if there is a bus stop or a building's entrance for cars.

You can see that the branches of the plane trees limit the height of the vehicles that passes the bicycle path.

This photo also shows that the low branches of the plane trees contribute to preventing a car from entering the pathway for exclusive use of the two-wheeled vehicle.

In addition, buses do not cross the white line into the bicycle path, and let passengers get on and of at a bus stop.

There were some pedestrians walking on the bicycle path when there were no bicycles in the path.

At the intersection of Sheng Zhou Rd.

Please pay attention to the person with orange jacket.
He waited on the roadside until the intersection is cleared, then walked in to sweep the streets.
There is a display to show the time to wait at the signal.

The plane trees play an important role in creating public spaces that are people-friendly, with their low branches keeping the pathways for exclusive use of the two-wheeled vehicle car-free, creating an eco-friendly environment.

In fact, more than half of these riders waiting at a stoplight use electric two-wheeled vehicles.
